Unresolved & Ongoing Transport Issues affecting Whipps Cross Hospital. A special edition eNewsletter by Gwyneth Deakins (Churchfields):
We at Redbridge Liberal Democrats are very concerned about the ongoing Whipps Cross Hospital-related transport issues within our borough. One our most active South Woodford members, Nat Pabla, notes:
'The main issue I feel is that there is only one bus every half hour going into Whipps Cross itself (serving Wanstead, Snaresbrook, South Woodford, and Walthamstow Village). It then goes on to Walthamstow Bus/Tube/Rail Station. These buses are too small to cope with the narrow residential streets full of parked cars. During school peak travel times, these buses are not infrequently at maximum capacity. As we all know, some hospital appointments require you to travel at these times.'
Indeed, as Churchfields campaigner Dr. Mark Twitchett has remarked: 'the frequency of buses does not currently meet the borough’s hospital access needs. Staff and visitor parking is limited and can be expensive. We should not be encouraging car travel when appropriate public transport should be available. Hospital staff sometimes have to wait for anything up to 29 minutes for a bus, adding to an already tiring day.'
Of great concern, there are often insufficient numbers of appropriate seats due to the style of the buses.
