Ian Duncan Smith: Brexit & Dominic Cummings

Ian Duncan Smith is now claiming the Brexit 'Withdrawal Agreement' is bad for the UK after all! An article by the Churchfields Liberal Democrats.

When the Brexit Withdrawal Bill was being considered by the House of Commons, the Chingford & Woodford Green MP supported it enthusiastically (naturally). Indeed, he opposed any detailed discussion of the Bill at its Committee Stage, saying:

“We’ve had more than 100 hours in committee over the last 3 and a half years. If there is anything about this arrangement that we have not now debated, thrashed to death, I would love to know what it is.”

Yet, it now appears that he wants to re-open discussion on the Withdrawal Agreement, claiming: “Buried in the fine print, unnoticed by many, is the fact we remain hooked into the EU’s loan book.” For entirely different reasons, of course, we in the Liberal Democrats agree with IDS that the Withdrawal Agreement is bad for the UK. However, we leave you to judge whether IDS’s recent comments are sheer hypocrisy, just plain incompetence or something else entirely.

IDS is also silent on the Dominic Cummings row:

The revelation that Dominic Cummings (the Prime Minister’s adviser) had taken a trip to Durham during the strict lockdown caused national outrage. The additional revelation that he had driven to Barnard Castle to ‘test his eyesight’ added insult to injury. Many Conservative MPs joined the public criticism of Mr. Cummings. This did not include local MP Iain Duncan Smith. Instead IDS simply passed on letters received from angry constituents to the Prime Minister’s office, and then passed back the Prime Minister’s statement defending Mr. Cummings. This isn’t good enough.

We deserve proper representation from IDS, not an expensive post box facility. Many of his constituents, like millions across the country, obeyed the rules in very difficult personal circumstances. They were deeply upset by an apparent: ‘one rule for us, another for Boris’s mates.’ Iain Duncan Smith should have stood up for them...
